Greetings Friends!
Remember the harrowing moment in 2021 when the president of the United States asked Georgia’s secretary of state to falsify the vote count so he could steal Georgia? But Bradford Jay Raffensperger stood up for election integrity and refused? Well, in 2022 the same rotten gang is working to elect 2020 election deniers as secretaries of state, including in the key swing states of Michigan, Nevada, and Arizona. As Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson told NPR: “It’s like putting arsonists in charge of a fire department.”
This year the nonprofit Democratic Association of Secretaries of State (“Democratic” meaning both “Democrats” and supporters of democracy) is defending democracy by reaching out to voters and supporting candidates who believe in the true power of the ballot. This month, we’re helping DASS test-drive its postcarding voter outreach campaign — by postcarding Michigan in support of incumbent Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.
Benson is a fierce advocate for democracy. In 2018, she became Michigan’s first D secretary of state since 1995. As SoS, she has expanded access to voting, implemented automatic voter registration, and championed the creation of an independent redistricting commission to eliminate gerrymandering. And she literally wrote the book on state secretaries of state as guardians of democracy.
This year Benson is running against 2020 election denier and QAnon sympathizer Kristina Karamo.
